I am new to birdwatching march 2011 and also bought my first "real" camara a canon 500D with a 300mm lense. I have been increasing my list of birds on the channel island of Guernsey and I ended my first year with 129 and have been trying to get some photos to capture these loverly birds. I would like to welcome you to my web site and would also like to welcome and comments.
I have been a bird watcher for one year now and i am enjoying trying to get better photos as well so i am trying out a sigma 170mm-500mm lense and hopefully will be able to get the wife to let me buy it.
I have now brought the Sigma 170mm-500mm lense and i am very happy wirth the results.

March

Walk with friends on the 3rd

The sun is out i must leave work and meet Simon, Lee, Tony and Derek at Fort Hommet.
A Rock Pipet or is it a Water Pipet, we could not decide but we have photos and will hope.

It is windy and we decide that we will leave the coast and head for Silbe.

Spring is here, spring flowers and 10 mallard Chicks.

Buzzards are great and we had Jackdaw which is a first for my year list which takes me to 90.

Loverly sunshine so we walk back to the car and on to Claire Mare only three of us now. all the normal ducks and a Pochard. play with the camera and settings and hopfully some nice photos.

another great day and i have had another guernsey birder showing an interest in joining our ever growing group of explorers.

I have phoned the man who has been allowing me to try out his 170mm-500mm sigma lense and have agreed to buy it, told you it was a good day.

What you doing

Thursday i have work all day but a spare hour opens up around lunch time and the sun is out i can not waste this chance. Grands Maries is a private pond with a loverly tree lined walk going around it. the peolpe who own it do not mind me using it and it is a great place to stand and watch smaller birds (some of which i can now ID).

It was really good weather and lots of fun as the birds would not sit still and there are lots of branches on these trees and of course they are always just the other side of some. But i managed to gets these which i think are quite nice and as Lee well tell you the Longtailed Tit is my favourite Bird ( I may have more then one). I think they have great personalty, cheeky chap.

Then a Chiffchaff but he would not sit still and smile i had to follow him aroud a bit and always a small twig or two got in the way. But not too bad concidering one day i will get some good ones.

Friday I had an hour between finishing work and picking up the children. So down to clair Mare then. The light was not as good as Thursday but if i am going to get better as a photographer then i have to be able to deal with these little problems and any chance to watch the birds.

Sorry that is it i have to spend some time at home with the wife and children but there is still saturday and sunday and i will keep you all up to date as soon as i can.

April

April starts with a lifer for me and an uncommon vistor to the Island a Red-rumped Swallow. This brings me to 101 different birds for the year.
I hope you feel my photos are also getting better and that the £250 spent on a new lense was a good move. I am not able to increase my list for at least a week as i am holiday with the family in England but if i see anything nice and get the chance to take a photo i will share on my return.

May

My frist bird race day in May a team of five of the newest birders spent 17 hours on a sunday around Guernsey and the near by Island of Herm looking for as many species of birds as we could. We managed 72 and are very pleased with our selves we had a great day and had 9 lifers and around 30 year listers for the team. By the 12th may my list had gone up to 117 for the Year only 10 more needed for last years total. Lets see what tomorrow brings.
